52 Years of Selfless Sevice
After 21 years of civil service, 16 of them as McChord's Airfield Manager, Ronald "RD" Reid retires Oct 31, 2009. Mr. Reid has consistently provided a safe and efficient airfield for Team McChord since 1993. During this period, he was involved -- from planning to completion -- in more than $100M in airfield construction projects, most notably to facilitate the C-17A arrival at McChord. During this time, Mr. Reid ensured demanding unified facilities criteria were met for each project. He also played a pivotal role in McChord's first RODEO in 1996 as he guided his team through an FAA flight planning system upgrade enabling McChord's Airfield Management team to process the 150 percent increase in flight plans for RODEO with ease. Mr. Reid has provided rock-solid continuity for every RODEO competition since, culminating with RODEO 2009 in which the Air Mobility Command commander lauded, "Best RODEO ever...nailed it!" In 1999, he introduced a new Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard Program initiative that saw local bird strikes plummet from $500K in damage in 1998 to zero in 1999. Before joining Team McChord, Mr. Reid retired from the Air Force once before as a Chief Master Sergeant with 31 years of uniformed service. In 1988, he completed his active duty career as the tower chief controller at George AFB, Calif. With 52 years of selfless service to his country, Mr. Reid is a shining example of the incredible civilians Team McChord is fortunate to have executing the mission every day. Author Jim Collins, in his book, Good to Great, states the adage, "People are your most important asset, misses the mark. People are not your most important asset. The right people are." Mr. Reid has been the right person for the Air Force for 52 years.

McChord Airmen celebrate 10 years of C-17 Globemaster III missions to 'the ice"
McChord Airmen of the 304th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron gather on the Pegasus ice runway near McMurdo Station, Antarctica Oct. 15. The Airmen delivered more than 95,000 pounds of cargo and four passengers to “the ice” on a mission that marked the 10th Anniversary of the C-17's Globemaster III’s first Operation Deep Freeze flight – Oct. 15,1999. “Our motto – ‘Perfect … Always’, has been the standard for the last decade,” said Lt. Col. Jim McGann, 62nd Operations Group deputy commander. “We’ve flown more than 300 missions, set aviation records and made aviation history while flying to the most remote place on the planet,” said Colonel McGann. "The C-17 has revolutionized how we do business down here," said Lt. Col. Robert Wellington, 304th EAS commander, working for Joint Task Force Support Forces Antarctica. "We can better satisfy user requirements - we're leaner, more efficient, and use fewer resources.” (Courtesy photo)
