Marvin Fisher 62nd Airlift Wing director of staff JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- My fondest holiday memories growing up are of the long road trips to visit my grandparents and to spend a long holiday weekend with a dozen cousins, sitting at the kids' table wondering when I would get to move up to the "big" table. Today, I am proud to say that I sit at the "big" table, but I still long to see my family so far away. I am sure many of you have similar memories from growing up. Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season, a time for many to travel and spend time with their loved ones. But as is the nature of our profession, we once again will mark this holiday season with many of our fellow Airman deployed, spending the holidays away from their home and their loved ones. For most, the holidays are a wonderful time, a time for reflection, giving and sharing. But for some, the holidays can be a difficult time of the year, especially for those who find themselves away from home and their loved ones. If you have friends, co-workers or Airmen that are deployed this holiday season, take the time to call them, or drop them a line, and thank them for their sacrifice and commitment. Remind them that you have their back while they're gone, and that you look forward to their safe return. Do the same for your single Airmen that are not able to get home for the holidays. At times, the challenges before us may seem insurmountable, but take some time, especially during the holiday season, to reflect on what is truly important in life. Make a point to create a fond and lasting memory of this holiday season.
