Prepare for a scare

These dark, cold nights have been the perfect backdrop for all the haunted festivities taking place at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Screams or both terror and delight could be heard from far and near during the "Walk In The Dark" and "Haunted Asylum" events that kicked off Oct. 23. Both places will be open Halloween weekend.

McChord Haunted House

The ghouls at the "Haunted Asylum" on McChord Field were so frightening some of the brave souls attempting to make their way through the haunted house had to cut out early.

"We've had people quit on us midway through," said Master Sgt. Antonio Longoria, 627th Civil Engineer Squadron.

The 627th CES is once again hosting the haunted house that is setup with multiple tents for visitors to make their way through. The Haunted Asylum had its opening weekend Oct. 23 through Sunday and has already raised $3,000.

"Saturday was a huge success it was real busy, just nonstop," Longoria said.

It takes a lot of people to help run the event.

Longoria said they can have anywhere from 20 to 30 volunteers helping out each night.

The house is set up with tents decorated as different wards that could be found in a dramatized mental institution.

"So the first ward will be behavioral modifications," Longoria said. "Then you have your shock therapy, you have a maintenance ward or worship ward, a children's ward and a therapy room."

At the end of asylum, participants are given discharge papers where they can give feedback to the organizers about the haunted house.

"So they can critique what parts they like the most and how we can improve," Longoria said.

A special scare-free performance will take place at the asylum today from 6 to 7 p.m. Despite this special event being more kid-friendly, Longoria warns that it can still be too scary for some little ones because of how quickly it gets dark.

The haunted house will be open today through Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m. at 43 Barnes Blvd.

A Walk in the Dark

The annual "Walk In The Dark" at Shoreline Park also continues today through Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. Younger kids wanting to participate can visit Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. for a not-so scary event. The annual event is hosted by JBLM's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and Better Opportunities for Single Service members. The walk in the dark greets you at Shoreline Park on Lewis North.

It's an interactive horror theater where guests become part of the show. Guests are led by guides. Safety is the number one priority so personnel trained in first aid are always on-site.
