Airmen secure protective suits and masks during ability to survive and operate training Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 at McChord. The training was in preparation for the mobility exercise this week. The MOBEX tests the 62nd Airlift Wing’s ability to deploy, survive and operate in a combat environment and return home. According to the plans and programs staff, the MOBEX represents the first time that Team McChord has evaluated its war fighting capabilities since the last Operational Readiness Exercise in 2006. Fit teens
Airman 1st Class Mallory Paul, 62nd Force Support Squadron fitness specialist, instructs Kayla Harris, a high school teen, on the proper use of weight training equipment during a Tone Program orientation at the main gym Oct. 10. The McChord Teen Exercise Program educates teens between the ages of 13 to 15 on the proper use of cardio and weight equipment. Teens will be issued a Tone identification card when they complete the orientation and may use the treadmill, upright and recumbent bikes, stair stepper, and elliptical trainer as well as the Life Fitness weight circuits without parental supervision. Defense attache visit
Staff Sgt. Kasie Spearman, 62nd Force Support Squadron, answers questions from foreign defense attachés concerning personnel readiness during a C-17 Globemaster III static display Wednesday in Hangar 4. The group was visiting McChord as part of the Fall 2008 Defense Attaché Operations Orientation Program that introduces the Foreign Defense Attachés to Defense Department and federal agency personnel, missions, facilities, training, weapons systems and capabilities, and exposes them to the industrial, historical and cultural aspects of American society. The program builds on the cooperation between the Defense Department and foreign militaries. McChord was included in a tour including a stop at Fort Lewis and several stops in Alaska.

Airman 1st Class Peter Nodland, 62nd Operations Support Squadron, right, listens as Thomas C. Nelson, a former Prisoner of War tells his story during a meet and greet at the McChord club Sept 18. Nelson was captured during the Battle of Santa Cruz by the Japanese destroyer Yugumo in 1942 while serving in the Navy as an aviation radioman aboard the USS Enterprise CV-6 and interned in Japan for the remainder of the war. Night vision
Lt. Col. Robert Weichert, a C-17 evaluator pilot with the 313th Airlift Squadron at McChord looks out over the ice after the first-ever night vision-assisted landing on Pegasus Ice Runway near McMurdo Station, Antarctica Thursday. Lieutenant Colonel Weichert is part of a crew testing the concept of using night vision technology in combination with reflective cones and limited electrical lighting to land safely on the ice runway after dark. The historic mission was conducted by Joint Task Force Support Forces Antarctica, headquartered at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii and led by the 13th Air Force.
