The Faces of the 62nd Airlift Wing Published Aug. 8, 2014 By Col. David Kumashiro test JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- Wow! Time sure does fly by! Fastest year of my life by far! It seems like just yesterday that I was afforded the incredible opportunity and privilege to join the Airmen of the 62nd Airlift Wing and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Recently, our 62nd AW Public Affairs officer asked me several questions about my first year in command. Great questions and I'm pretty sure I could have answered them using my normal, witty prose. But instead, I wanted to share my reflections of my first year in command in a different way. Now many of you probably know that I have gained a little bit of a reputation--maybe even notoriety--over the course of the last year for my technical skills with- and prolific use of- the "selfie." "Uh oh--run and hide! Here comes Col. K with his phone! " All joking aside however, I now have a pretty cool library of pics that I can share with others--pictures that tell stories of Airmen and really speak to the Faces of the 62nd Airlift Wing! Faces like Staff Sgt. Andrew Wagner, a loadmaster from the 7th Airlift Squadron who let me share his office for the day during a seven-ship formation airdrop sortie! What incredible professionalism and technical skill! Or the faces of our brand new Airmen at JBLM--faces that reflect the diversity of our Nation and our Air Force! Or the faces of our 62nd AW and 627th Air Base Group Airmen who deployed with a day's notice to the Central African Republic--faces of Airmen who serve others during a time of need. Or the faces of our graduates of the Community College of the Air Force and the University of Washington ROTC Det 910, who will serve as the foundation of our Next Gen Airmen. Or the faces of our spouses and families, who sacrifice so much every day--EVERY DAY--so we can accomplish our Global Reach mission. Or the faces of our so very dedicated community partners who provide us with awesome support! Or the faces of our joint base partners--making joint basing and joint operations work! Or the faces of those who understand the importance of respect for others and creating a culture that remains true to our core values of Integrity, Service, and Excellence. Faces of professionals whom I'm proud to serve with! As I reflect on the last year, I can't even begin to express the profound sense of humility I feel each and every day--a sense of humility that stems from serving Airmen, serving our Air Force, and serving our Nation. Sky's the limit and our future is bright!
