The air was crisp as the sun set on a seemingly rare and beautiful Northwest fall evening at Rainier field Tuesday. The conditions set the perfect stage for an intramural football game featuring past powerhouses, as the 62nd Maintenance Squadron defeated Western Air Defense Sector, 26-6.

From the very start things went MXS' way as Wesley Brown intercepted a WADS lateral on the opening kickoff. MXS struck quickly with a pass from quarterback Brandon "Bama" Brown to Kelvin Davis. On the ensuing possession, Brown nabbed another interception and streaked in for another touchdown only three minutes into the game. MXS remained in control with strong defense aided by the relentless pursuit of Juan Gomez-Navarro, who kept pressure on the aerial attack of WADS by forcing quarterback Robert Staszek into numerous scrambling situations and several tough throws. MXS held WADS scoreless in the first half.

The second half saw MXS' bring out the Halloween trickery when Brown lateraled to Karl Castaneda, who then launched the ball Brown for a score. Even though MXS led 19-0 midway through the second half, WADS would not give up. Steven Spalding intercepted a MXS pass to put WADS in scoring position and on the next play caught a touchdown pass to make it 19-6.

Ultimately, the large deficit proved to be too much for WADS to overcome as MXS ran an assortment of highlight-reel plays -- including an around the back pass from Brown that went for a large gain. The victory lifted MXS to 5-4 on the year, keeping them in the hunt for the playoffs while WADS fell to 3-8 and saw their playoff hopes take a heavy hit.

"Everyone's getting used to each other, we have a lot of athletes, and we stayed focused," Brown said. "This was a statement game for us."

"The defense stayed with their man and in position to make plays," added Davis. WADS faces the 62nd Operations Support Squadron next, while MXS will play the 4the Airlift Squadron and the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron, as jockeying for playoff positions continue.
