History

The 62nd Operations Support Squadron was originally constituted as the 62nd Airdrome Squadron on 25 January 1943 and activated on 1 February 1943 at Harvard Army Air Base Neb. On 31 March 1943, the squadron was transferred to Alamogordo, N.M. It was redesignated the 62nd Airdrome Squadron (Special) on 16 April 1943 and, on 8 May 1943, it was transferred back to Harvard AAB. On 28 July 1943, the squadron was moved to Topeka Army Air Base Kan. Its short history ended there when it was disbanded on 1 April 1944.

On 1 December 1991, a result of the Air Force's Objective Wing Structure, the squadron was reconstituted and redesignated the 62nd Operations Support Squadron and activated at McChord Air Force Base, Wash. This new structure combined numerous support agencies into one squadron whose mission is to integrate training, planning, and operations support for McChord Field's four active C-17 squadrons, the 446th Airlift Wing, and the Western Air Defense Sector.
